METHODOLOGY

Designing the conditions for human readiness.

Whether we're preparing for an important meeting, learning a new skill, recovering from stress, or solving a complex problem, our ability to perform depends on the conditions that shape us in that moment. At Techne, we study how people move from one state to another, and how thoughtfully designed experiences can help support that transition.

Rather than asking people to change who they are, we begin by understanding where they are, where they

want to go, and what conditions can help them get there.

Design Intelligence is the methodology behind Techne. It is built on a simple idea:

Better outcomes begin long before the work itself. They emerge when we intentionally design the conditions that make them possible.

Every journey begins with the current state.

Instead of asking people to diagnose themselves or choose from predefined categories, our interactions begin with a simple question:

What are you doing now?

Understanding where someone is starting is essential to understanding where they want to go. Just as reaching New York depends on whether you're beginning in Boston, New Jersey, or California, the experiences that support human readiness depend on each person's current state, context, and intended task.

Current state is more than a momentary feeling. It reflects the dynamic interaction between the body, mind, environment, available time, task demands, previous experiences, and countless other conditions that shape readiness. Two people may share the same goal while requiring entirely different pathways to reach it.

Understanding the entry state is the beginning of intelligent design.

Design for relationships

Once the current state is understood, we ask a second question.

What do you want to do next?

The destination is not chosen for the user. It is chosen by the user.

Whether someone is preparing for a presentation, recovering after a demanding meeting, studying for an exam, returning to creative work, or simply resting after a long day, our role is not to prescribe the goal. Our role is to help people move toward the goals that matter to them.

Human readiness is influenced by relationships rather than isolated variables. Our methodology considers how people, environments, tasks, time, physical states, emotions, and intentions interact with one another.

Rather than optimizing individual factors in isolation, Design Intelligence seeks to understand which relationships matter most in a given moment and how they can be intentionally shaped.

Designing the transition.

The moments between activities often determine how well we perform. Every experience is designed as a transition between two states.

Moving from distraction to focus.

From fatigue to recovery.

From uncertainty to confidence.

These transitions are not accidental. They can be thoughtfully designed.

Our work focuses on creating experiences that help people move intentionally toward the conditions that best support what they want to do next.

Design does not guarantee outcomes. It designs the conditions from which desired outcomes are more likely to emerge. Every decision—from the sequence of interactions to timing, language, movement, attention, sensory input, and feedback—is intentionally designed to support that transition.

Designing conditions and learning through design.

Every interaction becomes part of a growing understanding.

Experiences, observations, and outcomes continuously inform future designs, allowing the methodology to evolve alongside the people and organizations using it.

Design Intelligence is not a fixed system.

It is a continually evolving practice of understanding people, designing conditions, and learning through interaction. Conditions shape human experience in ways that are often invisible.

Physical environments.

Mental load.

Available time.

Task demands.

Habits.

Relationships.

Movement.

Attention.

Expectation.

Our methodology studies how these conditions interact and how thoughtful design can intentionally influence them. Experiences become one way of designing conditions. Technology becomes another. Physical environments. Organizations. Stories. Public systems. Each becomes an opportunity to create conditions that help people and communities flourish.

Every transition creates an opportunity to learn.

Over time, patterns emerge between current states, desired outcomes, designed conditions, experiences, and measurable results. Vitality Intelligence (VIT) is designed to understand these relationships, enabling experiences to become increasingly responsive while remaining transparent and human-centered. Rather than simply personalizing content, VIT learns how people move between states and what conditions consistently support successful transitions.

The most important designs of the future may be the ones people never notice—only the lives they make possible.

Every collaboration begins with a conversation.
